In December 1983, United Van Lines World Headquarters, under the guidance of President Bob Baer, introduced the first of a series of activities designed to demonstrate the corporation's "commitment to excellence" . . . to the provision of quality service by motivating employee's at all levels to excel in their particular jobs.
In recent years, "excellence" has become a fashionable temporary pastime in many organizations, triggered by a number of best-sellers on the subject. United's commitment has been consistently envisioned as long-term and has been more "home-grown" - tailored to the specific needs of the worldwide mover which, in 1989, had revenues of over $750 million and today ranks as the 31st largest transportation company of any mode in the nation.
At World Headquarters in suburban St. Louis, over half of the 900 employees are involved in a wide range of "wellness" activities designed to improve their overall fitness; incentives are provided for improving operations; United offers confidential counseling for top performers and corporate risk-takers; and college-credit courses are offered through "United University" in the Headquarters building, with tuition reimbursement based on grades earned.
Over 100 United agents have voluntarily become involved in "People, Pride, and Performance," an extension of the "excellence" concepts which have proven successful at Headquarters. The response has been overwhelming from these independent business professionals who are affiliated with United because they share the van line's philosophy of quality service - and who recognize in the "excellence" program the potential for making their own operations even better.
United's van operators are acknowledged as the carrier’s "Keys to Excellence" and are, like Headquarters employees and agents, benefiting from the personal and professional improvement aspects of the United Program. Through it, various new approaches to assisting van operators are being explored - ranging from "wellness" tips to help them cope with life on the road, to involvement in major United meetings, and obtaining discounts from national lodging chains.
United's "commitment to excellence" has been successful because it is viewed, not as a separate program, but rather as part of each day's work - a different way of looking at assignments, fellow employees, and the special talents each person brings to the workplace. It is a practical, down to-earth application and common-sense techniques for instilling the best elements of an already successful formula into a process shared by employees throughout the company ... leading to even higher levels of service for United Van Lines customers.
As a worldwide leader in providing household goods transportation and related services United Van Lines has built its reputation upon the accomplishments of its people at all levels of the organization. The members of the United family - agents, van operators, and Headquarters employees - all share certain key values and principles:
... an appreciation of the individual’s rights, responsibilities, beliefs, sensitivities, and needs.
... an obsession for turning in the best possible performance on every job ... in every department ... for every customer ... every day.
... a recognition that our only product is “service” - and that our product's acceptance depends solely upon the quality each of us invests in it.
... an acknowledgment that risk-taking, supported by reason, is a force of unlimited potential.
... a commitment to “success”, as measured by financial profitability coupled with the uncompromising integrity expected of a responsible, responsive corporate citizen.
... an obligation to be an active, positive force in the world around us - the markets we serve, the communities in which we live and work, the industry of which we are part.
... an understanding that, regardless of our roles within the United family, we are all partners in the process of shaping tomorrow through today’s accomplishments and careful planning for the future.
